How to Create the Ideal Ergonomic Desk Set Up

Ergonomics is the focus on how people engage with their environment. Given the amount of time we spend performing our given jobs, this holds great focus in our workplaces, including everything from the design of office furniture to the layout of our workstations. An ergonomic desk set-up takes into account the way you work and the things you need to be productive, whilst also ensuring you aren’t sacrificing your posture and greater wellbeing.

Our experts at Christopher’s Remedial Massage explore some of the benefits of establishing an ergonomic workstation, as well as some simple tips to follow that can make a tremendous improvement.

Benefits of an Ergonomic Workstation

There are many benefits of using an ergonomic workstation, including:

  1. Reduced risk of musculoskeletal disorders: Musculoskeletal disorders involve injuries to the muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, or nerves, and can be caused by repetitive motions, awkward positions, or excessive force. This often requires a range of remedial massage treatments to correct. Using an ergonomic workstation can help reduce such risks and keep you in a good posture, whilst also avoiding unfavourable, repetitive motions.
  2. Increased comfort: Although it may take some initial adjustment, an ergonomic workstation will increase comfort by providing a comfortable, well-supported chair, alignment of your monitor, keyboard and mouse, as well as proper lighting and adequate space to work.
  3. Increased productivity: Naturally, as a more comfortable worker not impaired by any musculoskeletal conditions (perhaps even leading to absenteeism), concentration and productivity will be far greater, likely resulting in less time needing to be spent at a desk.

Tips to Establish a More Ergonomic Workstation

Your Monitor

First, you want to be able to see your monitor clearly without straining your eyes and to perform your work without difficulty, so adjust brightness settings and keep close to your keyboard. Furthermore, you want your neck to remain in a neutral position, so keep the top of the screen at eye level to prevent strain. If possible, position your monitor on an adjustable stand to easily change the level (a stack of books can work just as well).

Your Keyboard and Mouse

The keyboard and mouse should be positioned so your wrists are in a neutral position, located at the same level as your elbows when in use. If your keyboard has a numeric keypad, you may want to position it to the side so that you’re not reaching over it when typing.

Your Chair

Your chair should be adjustable to find a comfortable position whilst providing support for your back and neck (backrests should be at a 100-110 degree reclined angle). Armrests should also be set so your shoulders remain relaxed (if not possible, remove them).

When sitting in your chair, your feet should be flat on the floor and your knees should be at a 90-degree angle to your hips.
